El Cid’s Pectoral Cross

11th century. Wood and enamel

The crucifix is of gilded copper with an enamelled blue and white shroud. It belongs to the Romanesque style of the School of Limoges, and was donated to the Cathedral of Salamanca by Martín López de Hontiveros on 23rd December 1647. According to tradition it was carried by El Cid in his battles.
